Dear Bromfield Middle School Families, 

Thank you to everyone who attended last week’s Back-to-School Night. You can find the slideshow herePlease consider filling out this quick survey to share your feedback and suggestions for future BtSN events. 


Before you read this week’s updates from the UA and grade-level teams, I want to tell you that we have an open seat for a parent/caregiver on our TBMS School Council. Every school in the Commonwealth is required to have a School Council, whose purpose is to advise principals on matters of school goals, priorities, and budget. More details can be found here. If you are interested, please email me or contact the PTO directly (INFO@HARVARDPTO.ORG) - preferably by this Friday, Sep 27. 


Next week I will begin my exploration of the seven goal areas of our TBMS School Improvement Plan - which is still in draft form until we convene as a School Council in early October. I look forward to highlighting these goal areas as a way of keeping all parents and caregivers informed on the work we are doing as a school to educate and support your children. 


Finally, I want to give a huge shout-out to our Harvard PTO. They have already been so supportive this year - both of student programming and in terms of teacher appreciation. I was happy to create a new PTO-specific section to our weekly newsletter going forward. I look forward to future collaborations with this wonderful group!

WEEKLY UPDATES

SIXTH GRADE

This week the 6th graders are finishing up their first writing cycle of the year and learning how to structure argumentative paragraphs effectively. Once the first draft is completed, students will have the chance to revise and go through a peer review cycle. Next up we will be starting some grammar work based on pre-test data and skill review based on our first benchmark, using stories that connect to the unit 1 theme of inclusivity.


In FLEX, both teachers and students worked together on an assignment trying to answer the question “Who are you?” To begin the lesson we discussed “Energy Check-in” statements and questions. This was a great opportunity for students to share their favorite music, food, television shows, etc. Next, we played “Two Truths and a Lie”. Teachers used this activity to highlight students' differences and how they make us who we are. The activity culminated with a discussion about who they are now may not be who they are when they graduated high school.

SEVENTH GRADE

Seventh grade students have been making a case study of mung beans in science class, learning how these plants are a good example of the five characteristics of life and how they fit into the classification of living things.  Parallel to this, students are encouraged to bring in house plant cuttings from home for a year-long observation and study of plant growth.  Next up, we will begin to learn about cells, focusing on plant, animal, and bacteria, and including the basic organelles within each.  The year is off to an excellent start in science class and students are adjusting well to grade level expectations!


In Flex students have been making good use of academic support time.  Lessons on non-academic days have continued to focus on belonging, as well as basic organizational skills such as organizing Google drive.

EIGHTH GRADE

In eighth grade English language arts, our first whole class novella is Steinbeck's The Pearl.  Students practiced closely reading for characters' decisions in reading the first chapter.  They also practiced writing a paragraph analysis as they framed Steinbeck's characters' choices as greedy or supportive. Next week, we launch our English language arts independent reading program.  Students will go to the Harvard Public Library on Tuesday, September 24, during class.  All students will choose the book(s) they take out from the library.  Mrs. Segaloff, our school librarian, has sent an email to all students who need a Harvard Public Library card.  As noted in a recent email message to families from Ms. Hodgens and Mr. Shaw, please confirm with your child if they have received an email from Mrs. Segaloff, and if so, if they have filled out the library card form. The independent reading list of books from which students will choose is here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfYdbPxhhHuWqI_5xsc__BIQ5pspAWlz9GN_uS9XGN0x7MQ0A/viewform.  Please regularly ask your child what they are reading or plan to read for the independent reading program. 


In Flex, students have used their academic support time to meet with teachers and peers, and to work on assignments. They have also gotten to know their classmates in social emotional learning lessons.  On Monday, they brainstormed countries of the world, fruits and vegetables, animals, and types of careers which begin with the same letters.  We debriefed on how students feel about working under time limits with partners.  We also got to know classmates through interviews on topics ranging from favorite holidays to family background to favorite ways to spend free time.  Each partner introduced their classmate to a small group of peers, and we ultimately learned about common interests and distinct experiences shared among students in each Flex classroom.


UNIFIED ARTS

We're excited to kick off our Social Emotional Health unit this week in health class! My goal is to help students develop essential skills for managing their emotions, building healthy relationships, and making informed decisions. Sixth graders will be exploring the qualities of good friendships and identifying when a relationship might be unhealthy. Seventh graders will learn how their emotions can influence their behavior and discover strategies for managing them effectively. Eighth graders will delve into decision-making models to analyze real-life situations and make thoughtful choices.

COMMUNITY NEWS AND EVENTS

Fall Play Info Meeting 9/24 at 7:45 AM

We are excited to announce the upcoming fall play, a hilarious comedy that promises to be loads of fun for everyone involved! We invite all students in grades 6-12 to join us for an interest meeting tomorrow morning at 7:45 in Room 355 (Mrs. R's room). This meeting is open to anyone interested in participating, whether on stage or behind the scenes. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to express their creativity, make new friends, and be part of something special. We can’t wait to see your students there!

Town of Harvard Opioid Settlement Funds Survey

The Harvard Board of Health and the Addiction Abatement Fund Working Group are conducting a survey to determine the best utilization of the Opioid Settlement Funds that have been distributed to the town for Addiction Abatement.


We will be using the data from this survey and three (3) listening sessions (which will be conducted in October) to inform the Addiction Abatement Fund Working Group on how the town and surrounding communities would like the funds to be distributed.

Middlesex County 4H Fife and Drum Corps

The Middlesex County 4H Fife and Drum Corps was founded in 1972 in order to

pass on New England’s fife and drum tradition to young musicians.


The group’s repertoire consists of fife and drum music dating from the American

colonial period to modern pieces written in the traditional style.


Comprised of youth aged 8 to 18, the corps is led by its members, who elect their

leaders and determine their own events and repertoire each season.


4H has performed in parades and at historical commemorations throughout New

England, including Boston’s First Night festivities and the annual Patriots’ Day

ceremonies in Concord, where it has been the honor corps. It has also participated at

events such as Drummer’s Call in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.


Proud to carry a part of America’s early musical heritage into the 21st century, the

corps strives to develop musicianship, a sense of community, and patriotism, as

reflected in its motto:“Remembering our history, and playing it loud!”
