Weekly Newsletter | May 7, 2025
Dear Bromfield Middle School Families,
I have to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to the entire Harvard community for coming out to the polls and supporting our schools. As principal, I am tremendously thankful that I work in a community that clearly understands the importance of and values education. I look forward to continuing our important work for Harvard’s children with this remarkable show of support.
A quick reminder that we have a number of MCAS tests upcoming:
Friday, May 9: Math session 1 - grades 6-8
Tuesday, May 13: Math session 2 - grades 6-8
Thursday, May 15: Science sessions 1 & 2 - grade 8 only
I also want to make sure that our Class of ‘29 families save the date for our 8th Grade Celebration, which will take place on Monday, June 16. More info to come!
For the rest of my narrative this week, I have annexed the Grade 6 section, as my comments pertain expressly to the Class of 2031.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Mr. Daniel Hudder Bromfield Middle School Principal |

WEEKLY UPDATES
SIXTH GRADE
This week, the Grade 6 Team introduced assigned seating in the cafeteria, with students sitting by homeroom. This decision has been under consideration for some time, as we've seen ongoing challenges in how students interact socially throughout the school day. While there wasn't a single major incident, five separate situations on Monday - one observed by each core teacher and one in the cafeteria - increased our sense of urgency.
When I spoke to students at lunch on Tuesday, I reminded them that they are all great kids - and I truly believe that. At the same time, we need to see more growth in how they interact with one another, both in the cafeteria and in the classroom. Our teachers have been using SEL lessons during Flex to help build social skills, but we know there’s still work to do.
In the coming week, our team will reflect on what’s working and consider changes that can better support student growth. We appreciate your partnership and encourage you to speak with your child about their experiences at school. Most of our sixth graders already make positive contributions to our community, and we hope all students will take time to reflect on how they can help make school a great place for everyone.

SEVENTH GRADE
In English language arts, seventh graders are ending the year with The Outsiders. Students have enjoyed reading about teens from a different era. We began by building background on the text through an interactive presentation that familiarized them with rodeos, fashion, social movements, and slang prevalent in 1960s Oklahoma. After reading chapter two, students completed a narrative retelling of events from an alternative character’s point of view. Through this assignment, they are honing their skills of taking on a character’s voice, writing authentic dialogue grounded in setting, and building tension through conflict that results in character mental change.
In Flex, in addition to academic support, students have had band and chorus rehearsals to prepare for their spring concert. On Thursday, the seventh grade will participate in a “clap in” for our student athletes when they return from the Special Olympics. Finally, students will end the week with collaborative game play.

EIGHTH GRADE
In English language arts, students continue to read Lee’s novel while analyzing passages about courage in To Kill a Mockingbird. This year, all students have honed skills in close reading through fifteen core literary devices: diction, connotation, denotation, syntax, imagery, sensory details, concrete language, tone, mood, simile, metaphor, personification, repetition, allusion, and anecdote. We are learning about how Harper Lee uses these devices to create foreshadowing, defined as hints or clues of the plot yet to unfold. We zero in on how the author intensively foreshadows the mysterious crime at the novel’s end in earlier scenes and chapters -- in Deer’s Pasture, Miss Maudie’s garden, and Arthur Boo Radley’s tree.
In Flex, students started the week with a collaborative review for the MCAS mathematics test, which begins this Friday. They worked together with diligence, skill, and academic spirit. On Thursday, grade eight students will collaborate to lead school-wide support of the Special Olympics, which happens that day in Maynard. Grade eight students will make signs and posters to support athletes. Finally, our grade eight students also have continued academic support during Flex this week.
