Weekly Newsletter | September 18, 2025
Dear Bromfield Middle School Families,

I apologize for the one-day delay in this week’s newsletter. I was at my own children’s open house last night, which threw off the whole afternoon and evening routine. School-life balance is real!

This week we wrapped up our third and final start-of-year assembly. Ms. Faulconer, Dr. Horton, and I spoke with students about expectations for behavior, all with the goal of making sure every student feels a strong sense of belonging here at TBMS. Students were attentive and engaged across all three grades, which bodes well for an excellent year ahead.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Curriculum Night last week! The turnout was fantastic, and the atmosphere among parents and caregivers was both positive and supportive. The evening was made even more special by our talented student musicians, who performed classical music in the lobby; huge thanks to Profe Burokas for organizing this wonderful addition. And of course, thank you to our educators for their thoughtful and informative presentations. If you’d like to share any feedback on your Curriculum Night experience, please use this form

Finally, a quick plug for our upcoming Middle School Student Council elections. MSSC is a terrific opportunity for students to get involved, represent their grade, and develop leadership skills. Students interested in running for office should join the MSSC Google Classroom (instructions were emailed today by Ms. Bruning). Nomination forms and speeches are due by September 25. Any questions? Students can reach out to Ms. Bruning or Ms. Blanchette.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mr. Daniel Hudder
Bromfield Middle School Principal

WEEKLY UPDATES

SIXTH GRADE

Sixth graders have learned how to identify, order, and compare integers on a number line as well as how to find and apply absolute value. Those who did not fully understand the concepts, as evidenced by their assessments, will receive further review with Mrs. Bassage during FLEX next week. Students are currently learning how to compare rational numbers on a number line, as well as how to find and apply the greatest common factor and least common multiple. The sixth graders have made significant progress applying math concepts while gaining a deeper understanding of routines and expectations.

In FLEX class this month, we are placing special focus on strengthening students’ executive functioning skills, which are essential tools for success both inside and outside of school. Specifically, we are practicing time management, organizing assignments, and keeping track of homework.

Students are learning strategies to plan ahead, break down larger tasks into smaller steps, and use checklists or calendars to stay on top of their responsibilities.

Our goal is to help students build independence and confidence in handling their new daily academic responsibilities.

SEVENTH GRADE

Students in Math 7 have been learning about Proportional Relationships and finding the constant of proportionality (k) from a table, equation, and graph.  They learned about complex unit rates and how to convert unit rates when necessary to solve a problem.  They are finishing up their Food Truck Projects: Part 1, which requires them to design a food truck and a menu of their choosing.  The food trucks will be used as a theme for projects throughout the year.  Every week the students are also assigned a Skill Drill to review math skills.  The front focuses on topics from previous grades and units, and the back focuses on our current unit.

In Flex, seventh graders completed their community activities and filled out a survey giving us feedback on what they learned and how it could be improved.  They also have academic support this week to check in with teachers about assignments they had questions on, make up missed work, and to work on current assignments that are due soon.

EIGHTH GRADE

Students in Algebra I took their first quiz this week! Topics on this assessment covered the real number system which includes subsets of natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers and irrational numbers. Students learned how to categorize numbers based on these subsets, as well as how to order rational and irrational numbers on a number line. For some fun conversation with your student, I encourage you to ask them about where non-perfect squares fall into the number system and how they know that! A math hack I encourage families to do is to encourage their students to explain their reasoning as this is the part of math where misconceptions can be identified. I am looking forward to a great rest of this unit where students will learn how to simplify expressions and solve for an unknown variable in multi-step equations, as well as literal equations.

Last week, on September 11, students wrote notes of gratitude to local first responders in a tribute service action.  This service action marked the formal beginning of the eighth grade year of service and was in conjunction with eighth grade actions across the state that day, in conjunction with Project 351.  Thank you to all students for participating in this service launch. Ambassador Grace McWaters delivered the handmade cards later that afternoon to local police officers, firefighters, and EMTs.

In flex this week, students had an assembly with Mr. Hudder reviewing school expectations to help set up the grade for a successful and positive school year. Furthermore, students had two academic days this week, along with a fun plan for Friday. There was no flex on Wednesday, September 17th because it was a half day.

UNIFIED ARTS

Hello families! My name is Miss Emily Trainor, and I am so excited to be working with our middle school band this year. Over the past few weeks, students have been reviewing note names, rhythms, notation, and articulation. We’ve also been focusing on solfege, which helps us understand how we’re all playing the same starting note—even when it looks different on each instrument. Singing and humming solfege is an important step so that students feel the vibration of the note in their bodies before producing it on their instruments.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll begin exploring music for our December Winter Concert—always an exciting milestone in the year! As we prepare, please know that if you ever have questions about obtaining instruments, repairs, or needed materials, don’t hesitate to reach out.

I’m looking forward to a wonderful year of music-making together!

PLEASE TAKE 2 MINUTES TO HELP US IMPROVE CELLULAR SERVICE IN HARVARD!

The Town Administration is working to improve cellular network coverage throughout Harvard to ensure broader, more reliable 911 access, and to enhance the effectiveness of all cellular communications and applications.  Documented issues of poor coverage and dropped calls incentivize providers to expand coverage, so please participate in a simple 8-question anonymous survey about the quality of (or lack of) cellular service coverage at your home.

Survey results will be shared publicly with residents and with carriers to encourage equipment investments on existing towers and to attract carriers to the new cellular tower being built behind the Hildreth House.  The more responses the better! Please reply by October 15th

Please click https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FCPWYJ2 to take the survey!
