Weekly Newsletter | October 29, 2025
Dear Bromfield Middle School Families,

October has flown by! I have three quick, important announcements for you this week.

Support for Student Prayer

I want to make sure that students and families from all faiths know that we support their right to observe prayer during the school day as required by custom. One such example is Dhuhr Prayer/Noon prayer, which is observed by a number of Muslim students at school. Typically, this observance occurs in the small conference room off the main office. Any student who needs a private place to pray during school should come to the main office, and we will be sure their needs are met.

Costume Guidelines

- School rules regarding dress code must be followed: Nothing that promotes the use of illegal substances or activities or are derogatory, disrespectful, or depict violence.

- ALL costume preparations to be completed at home. (No dressing or applying of make-up or colored hairspray once students arrive at school).

- No face-paint.

- No blow-up costumes.

- No props of any kind.

Students or parents who have questions about the acceptability of their costume should check with their homeroom teacher prior to wearing the costume to school. Students wearing inappropriate costumes will need to call home to have a change of clothes brought to them.

I am asking parents and caregivers to please help support an appropriate, distraction-free learning environment for all students by assuring that your child adheres to these guidelines.

WEEKLY UPDATES

SIXTH GRADE

In science class, students have been actively exploring the physical properties of matter, with a focus on mass, volume, and density. Through a combination of online simulations, hands-on labs, and demonstrations, students have practiced observing and measuring these properties in a variety of materials. Recently, the class has transitioned from conceptual and observational investigations of density—such as how objects sink or float and why substances are heavier or lighter for their size—toward a deeper understanding of the mathematics behind density. Students are now solving word problems and calculations, using formulas to connect mass, volume, and density, and applying their knowledge to real-world scenarios. This progression supports critical thinking and prepares students to use their knowledge of density throughout the remainder of the school year.

As we approach the end of the first quarter, which closes on October 29th, 2025, we want to remind you that this is an important time for students to complete any missing work in their classes. We encourage you to check PowerSchool to see if your student(s) has any outstanding assignments in any subject area. Completing all work by the end of the quarter helps ensure your child’s grades reflect their best effort and learning so far.

We are also happy to share that the transition to middle school has gone very well this year. Our team of teachers is truly excited for the second quarter and is grateful to work with such a motivated group of students. Thank you for your ongoing support!

SEVENTH GRADE

In social studies students are exploring ancient civilizations of Sub-Saharan Africa.  The unique features of each society have been discovered through stories, artifacts, and written records.  Students are also annotating written passages in preparation for an end-of-unit assessment which requires that skill.

In addition to receiving academic support during FLEX, seventh graders completed a tiered intervention for ELA that focused on specific literary elements.  We will round out the week with a festive, team building exercise.

EIGHTH GRADE

In English language arts, students carried on with their practice of close reading, annotation, and structured writing as they continue to hone a mature prose voice.  Some of the concepts the students understand and readily apply are tools for lifelong literacy: symbolism, word choice, and new forms of characterization.  Independent reading novels; our whole class novella, The Pearl; and an excerpt from Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn -- these are the literary texts students analyzed to read, write, think, and speak with these milestone abstract concepts in the past week.  Looking for a vocabulary word to talk about at your residence?  Some of our recent words of the day include undulating, paradigm, and bulwark.

In Flex, we had a field trip to Monty Tech this week on Monday.  Students learned about the education the school provides.  In addition to academic support in Flex, grade eight students also are participating in the targeted intervention Flex lessons. This past Friday, students completed a tiered intervention lesson for math.  This math lesson was on rates of change.  Students completed a collaborative math poster exhibiting their learning.  Last Wednesday and again this week on Friday, students are participating in tiered intervention lessons for English language arts -- on how to conceptualize and write a START essay introduction on A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (excerpted) and a PEEL paragraph on Dickens’ David Copperfield (also excerpted).

UNIFIED ARTS

Our middle school band students have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming winter concert! In 6th grade, students are learning to produce a consistent sound on their instruments while practicing rhythms and notes for their concert piece. They’ve also been working on a creative project to showcase the first few notes on their instrument, adding fun with jokes, memes, or pictures!

7th graders have been focusing on articulation and dynamics in the piece Anthem of the Mountain Yeti, which features trombone slides and dramatic timpani effects. They are also experimenting with sounds to add to spooky stories. They have been exploring the different ways their instruments can produce unique sounds!

The 8th grade students have been rehearsing two challenging works—Ancient Voices and Prelude and Fugue. They’ve shown great progress with learning new notes, fast tempos, and even incorporating some singing into their playing!

As we look ahead to the months of November and December, families should note that December 8 is the Central District audition registration deadline (this is open to all 7th and 8th grade music students). Also, the date of our Winter Instrumental Concert is December 10 at 6:30 PM!

*Please note that the advertised TBMS Jazz Band is currently postponed and will not be running until further notice.

Basketball Interest Survey for Grade 7 and Grade 8

As indicated below, tryouts will be held soon for the middle school girls and boys basketball teams. Because there are limited spots on the teams and there has been very strong interest in Harvard basketball programs in the past, we are looking to gather information to maximize opportunities for students to play, either on the TBMS team or on Harvard recreational teams. If your grade 7 or 8 student is interested in playing basketball this winter, please respond to this survey by Friday, Nov 14. This information will be used for planning and communication with interested families as the season moves forward.

Boys and Girls Bromfield Middle School Basketball will hold try-outs for 7th and 8th grade students on Monday December 1st in the HES gymnasium. Boys will try out from 3:30 to 4:30 and girls will try-out from 4:30 to 5:30, these are also the practice times after try-outs are finished on Wednesday. Registration will be opening soon on the Bromfield Athletics Website. Please register, but wait to pay until try-outs have concluded as space on the team is limited. Be sure to have an up to date physical on file with the school. TBMS Basketball is a 5 day per week commitment. Please contact Tyler Wachtelhausen with any further questions at twachtelhausen@psharvard.org. More details will be shared to those who have registered, one week before try-outs begin 🏀🏀🏀
