Weekly Newsletter | November 5, 2025
Dear Bromfield Middle School Families,

No Internet, No Problem!

As you are probably aware, we were without our network for most of today - which included no access to copy machines. I will tell you: I could not be more proud of the faculty, staff, and students for how they handled this challenge. Despite the significant disruption, teachers pivoted while maintaining positivity. Even with this major break from routine, students remained engaged and behaved well - and clearly continued learning, such as this trio of grade 7 Dig Lit students who learned about programming conditionals using our Lego Spike robotics kits to build a safe deposit box! (Thanks again to our PTO and HST that helped fund these kits!!)

Fall Fest Tomorrow (Wed, Nov 6 , 3-5 PM)
We’re excited to host TBMS Fall Fest - a free event open to all middle school students, featuring games, music, karaoke, face painting, and pizza! Huge thanks to our Student Council for organizing and helping to cover the cost of the pizza.

I need to take a moment to clarify some expectations around behavior and safety:

  • Students must check in at the main lobby table at 3:00 PM.

  • Students must remain in designated areas (cafeteria, gym, and hallway in between).

  • If a student needs to leave early, a parent/caregiver must sign them out at the main entrance.

  • The event ends promptly at 5:00 PM.

  • All school rules apply. Violations may lead to disciplinary consequences, including exclusion from future events.

  • This event is for current TBMS students only.

Report Cards Coming Soon

While the network disruption threw a wrench in the works for getting grades into PowerSchool, we are still on track to send our report cards in the next few days. You can expect them to be sent no later than Monday.

TBS Talent on the Stage

I wanted to make a quick plug for the TBHS production of Clue this weekend. Details are below; I am planning to attend the Saturday matinee! While this production features only HS students, I am thrilled that our TBMS students will have their own musical production this winter: High School Musical! Details are below. Please note: auditions will take place on Tuesday, Nov 18. Register here!

The days and times for conferences are:

  • Thursday, Nov 13, Noon - 4:30 PM and 5 - 6 PM

A couple of things to note as you sign-up:

WEEKLY UPDATES

SIXTH GRADE

In sixth grade we took a quick detour from Seedfolks to review narrative arcs and write our own short stories set in real abandoned places around the world. Throughout quarter 2 we will continue to review narrative structure using a variety of picture books.

In quarter 2 we will also continue to start each class with independent reading. Over the past few weeks we’ve used our independent reading books to discuss characterization and we will soon be starting a project using independent reading to review narrative structure as well. During the first week of November classes will be visiting the town library to explore books students might want to read next! It’s been great hearing about the wonderful books students are reading and seeing them share recommendations with each other.

November is also Native American Heritage month. Here is a list of relevant books for children of all ages. A display of books related to Native American Heritage month has replaced the display for Hispanic Heritage Month. Encourage your student to check it out!

SEVENTH GRADE

In seventh grade ELA, we paused in our reading of The Breadwinner to spend a week analyzing “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl. The students enjoyed unpacking Dahl’s work in teams during an ELA-focused Flex period. Groups examined how Dahl used diction, foreshadowing, characterization, setting imagery, and dramatic irony to create a dark and suspenseful mood within his work. In the following ELA class, students informally presented on their assigned literary device. Other activities related to “The Landlady” included a comparison of the text to the German fairy-tale “Hansel and Gretel” to examine how each work similarly developed the theme of appearances can be deceiving, and a vocabulary one-pager.

Looking ahead, over the next few weeks in ELA, students will finish the remaining chapters in The Breadwinner, write an essay on how the protagonist developed over the course of the story, and take a quiz on our current grammar focus: sentences, fragments, and run-ons.

During Flex, students continue to have balanced time between academic support and lessons in ELA and math. During their academic time, students are seeking help from teachers, catching up and staying on top of assignments, and completing assessment revisions or retakes. During ELA and math lessons, students are receiving additional support or enrichment activities in those subject areas.

EIGHTH GRADE

Matter and energy are the focus of our current unit in science. Students have learned the major sub-categories of matter and energy, how matter transforms from type to type and energy transforms from type to type.  We are ending this unit with a guided inquiry about balances and student presentations about topics in powering our society with electricity. In the inquiry about balances, students have a chance to try to make a math equation to express how a balance works.

In the energy research jig-saw project, each student will be presenting one source or storage technique including a basic explanation of how it works and the pros and cons of using the method. The knowledge from this unit will be used throughout the year to further understanding of physics and chemistry.

In flex students have had academic time to pick away at the work for all of their classes.  They have been able to seek help they need with their choice of teacher, and they have been able to forge ahead on group work. Other days students have had tiered lessons in ELA and math.

UNIFIED ARTS

Hey everyone it's Kae Pierron the art teacher here with your UA update for this week's newsletter!

I hope you’re all enjoying the fall season! It’s been such a wonderful and creative time in the art room!

Sixth grade has just started painting neon sign designs while learning all about tints and shades. They’ve been experimenting with color mixing to make their designs seem to glow just like real neon lights! Such a fun way to “light up” our art hallway this season.

They also finished their abstract line art projects not too long ago and those came out great!

Seventh and eighth graders recently wrapped up their monochromatic landscape paintings, and they look amazing! Each student used just one color to explore value and mood, creating peaceful and expressive scenes.

Now, they are getting started with clay! So far, they’ve been learning the basics, how to join pieces, roll coils, and add texture. It’s been exciting to see everyone dive into a new medium and get their hands dirty (in the best possible way!).

I’m so proud of all the creativity and hard work happening every day. As we head toward the holidays, I can’t wait to see what beautiful artworks they create!

Hope you enjoyed a peek into the art room. Until next time, see you all in winter!

Basketball Interest Survey for Grade 7 and Grade 8

As indicated below, tryouts will be held soon for the middle school girls and boys basketball teams. Because there are limited spots on the teams and there has been very strong interest in Harvard basketball programs in the past, we are looking to gather information to maximize opportunities for students to play, either on the TBMS team or on Harvard recreational teams. If your grade 7 or 8 student is interested in playing basketball this winter, please respond to this survey by Friday, Nov 14. This information will be used for planning and communication with interested families as the season moves forward.

Boys and Girls Bromfield Middle School Basketball will hold try-outs for 7th and 8th grade students on Monday December 1st in the HES gymnasium. Boys will try out from 3:30 to 4:30 and girls will try-out from 4:30 to 5:30, these are also the practice times after try-outs are finished on Wednesday. Registration will be opening soon on the Bromfield Athletics Website. Please register, but wait to pay until try-outs have concluded as space on the team is limited. Be sure to have an up to date physical on file with the school. TBMS Basketball is a 5 day per week commitment. Please contact Tyler Wachtelhausen with any further questions at twachtelhausen@psharvard.org. More details will be shared to those who have registered, one week before try-outs begin 🏀🏀🏀
