Posted Date: 11/12/25 (08:49 PM)

Weekly Newsletter | November 12, 2025
Dear Bromfield Middle School Families,

I am looking forward to seeing many of you tomorrow afternoon and evening for conferences. As a reminder, TBMS conferences will take place

  • Thursday, Nov 13, Noon - 4:30 PM and 5 - 6 PM

  • Thursday, Nov 20, Noon - 5 PM

The sign-up window closes tonight (Wed, 11/12) at 11:59 PM. The link to sign up is here.

Instructions for how to sign up are here.

A few things to note as you sign-up:

  • If you have never signed up for conferences for your child before (even if you have signed up for a sibling), you need to register your child using the directions linked above.

  • If you want to make appointments with the same teacher for different children or appointments at the same time with different teachers, there are also directions for how to make a secondary account for the same family.

  • If a teacher you were hoping to meet with is fully scheduled or unavailable for times that work for you, please reach out to that teacher directly. Our teachers are happy to connect with parents and caregivers outside of conferences to address any concerns about students’ learning.

A couple of things to keep in mind during conferences:

  • Many of our teachers are fully booked. Please be sure to stay within your time slot and clear out in time for the next person.

  • These are very long days for teachers, who will have already taught kids in the morning, and for parents/caregivers, who may be taking time out of work or after a full work day to attend. Please approach the experience with kindness and patience.

Finally, this is a final reminder that auditions for the TBMS productions of High School Musical are next Tuesday, Nov 18. Register here!

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mr. Daniel Hudder
Bromfield Middle School Principal

WEEKLY UPDATES

SIXTH GRADE

Over the past couple of weeks, our class has been working hard on understanding ratios, unit rates, and decimals. Students have been learning how to compare quantities using ratios and how to find unit rates to solve real-world problems. We also reviewed how decimals connect to fractions and percentages, helping students strengthen their number sense. Throughout this unit, students have shown great perseverance, especially when problems required multiple steps or careful reasoning. I’ve been impressed by how willing they are to collaborate, ask questions, and check their work for accuracy. Their confidence in applying these concepts to everyday situations—like comparing prices or analyzing data—has really grown. We wrapped up the unit with a quiz on Wednesday and Thursday, so please look for those results coming home soon!

In FLEX class, our focus has been on providing targeted instruction in both math and language arts to meet students’ individual learning needs. This approach allows each group of students to work on specific skills that support their continued academic growth. Whether it’s strengthening foundational math concepts or improving reading comprehension and writing skills, students are engaging in lessons designed just for them. Our team of teachers has been so pleased with the effort, focus, and positive attitude students bring to FLEX each day. Their willingness to take on challenges and support one another creates a great learning environment. We’re already seeing strong progress and growing confidence across the board.

SEVENTH GRADE

In Math, students recently wrapped up their Percent unit by completing the next phase of their Food Truck Project! They chose a truck, calculated bank loans using simple interest, took “orders” from classmates, and worked out tax, tips, and discounts. They also explored percent change and percent error to compare their predicted and actual sales. We’ve now kicked off a short two-week unit on rational numbers, where students are practicing operations with negative numbers before we dive into our upcoming algebra units on expressions and equations.

On academic Flex days, students continue to use the seventh-grade academic support slide as a guide to help them prioritize and complete assignments. During ELA Flex, students were provided with activities to practice and study for their upcoming grammar quiz.   In Math Flex, students engaged in a variety of enrichment activities designed to strengthen their understanding of current concepts and get them ready for upcoming units on equations and sequences.  They will rotate through each activity over the next few weeks.

EIGHTH GRADE

Slope and intercepts have been the main focus of math lately! Students have been studying and practicing various methods regarding how to find slope. Some methods include finding slope from two points using a formula, from a graph, from an equation, and from a table. Soon we will be transitioning our learning of linear equations to linear functions. During this, students will learn that every input has only one output in order for a linear function to be considered a function. They will do so by also analyzing graphs, tables, and arithmetic. By the end of this unit, students will be creating a project that compares two functions using visuals, explanations, and algebraic reasoning. Check in with your student to ask them about slope and other characteristics of linear functions!

In flex, students have been engaging in academic days to complete class assignments and collaborate with the teachers to grasp a deep understanding of the curriculum in their classes. 8th graders have been demonstrating a very strong ability to self advocate for the teachers they need to meet with and prioritizing their “to-do list” of assignments that must be completed. Furthermore, students have been participating in math & ELA lessons throughout the cycle. Students continue to practice and improve their reading comprehension skills, writing skills and mathematical problem solving skills, as well as working on their number sense. Keep up the great work, leaders of the middle school!

UNIFIED ARTS

This month in TBMS PE we’ve been exploring field sports from soccer to tag rugby and we are currently closing the fall with an American football skills day. As the temperatures begin to drop, we’ll be moving our activities into the gym for a small sided basketball games unit to coincide with the start of the town and school basketball season. A volleyball skills unit will lead us into a school wide tournament just before winter break. These more traditional team sports are presented with the goal of challenging experienced players while also being inclusive to those who are being introduced to them for the first time.

Basketball Interest Survey for Grade 7 and Grade 8

As indicated below, tryouts will be held soon for the middle school girls and boys basketball teams. Because there are limited spots on the teams and there has been very strong interest in Harvard basketball programs in the past, we are looking to gather information to maximize opportunities for students to play, either on the TBMS team or on Harvard recreational teams. If your grade 7 or 8 student is interested in playing basketball this winter, please respond to this survey by Friday, Nov 14. This information will be used for planning and communication with interested families as the season moves forward.

Boys and Girls Bromfield Middle School Basketball will hold try-outs for 7th and 8th grade students on Monday December 1st in the HES gymnasium. Boys will try out from 3:30 to 4:30 and girls will try-out from 4:30 to 5:30, these are also the practice times after try-outs are finished on Wednesday. Registration will be opening soon on the Bromfield Athletics Website. Please register, but wait to pay until try-outs have concluded as space on the team is limited. Be sure to have an up to date physical on file with the school. TBMS Basketball is a 5 day per week commitment. Please contact Tyler Wachtelhausen with any further questions at twachtelhausen@psharvard.org. More details will be shared to those who have registered, one week before try-outs begin 🏀🏀🏀
