Dear Bromfield Middle School Families,
Welcome back from a long(er) February vacation! I first want to take a moment to acknowledge the tremendous efforts that our custodial team has put forth this winter to manage the seemingly relentless snow. Time and again, our crew has come in early and stayed late to make sure our lots, driveways, and walkways are safe and clear. If you have arrived early on a snowy morning, you have probably seen them already out there at work. Thank you, team!
As many of you know, we are now in the second week of Ramadan, a holy month observed by many Muslims around the world. During Ramadan, those observing the holiday fast from food and drink from sunrise to sunset and often devote additional time to reflection, prayer, and community.
To support students observing Ramadan, we have designated alternative locations during lunch for students who would prefer not to spend that time in the cafeteria while others are eating. Students in first and second lunch (grades 8 and 6) may use the counseling office, while students in last lunch (grade 7) may use the TBS Library. These spaces are available for students to spend their lunch period quietly and comfortably during this time.
Finally, a quick scheduling update: the annual Glow Dance, to which all TBMS students are invited (including Grade 6!), will take place on Friday, April 10 this year. The original plan was for this dance to occur on March 20, but an unavoidable conflict required us to reschedule. We look forward to seeing many students there - it is always one of the most fun nights of the year at TBMS.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Mr. Daniel Hudder Bromfield Middle School Principal

WEEKLY UPDATES

SIXTH GRADE
In the world of 6th-Grade Ancient Civilizations, we recently wrapped up an exciting mini-unit in which students worked in small groups to create a presentation using Canva along with a screencast video about one of the following civilizations: the Olmec, Maya, Inca, or Aztec. Students collaborated to research, design slides, and present their learning in a creative digital format. The final videos were outstanding in quality—thoughtful, artistic, and informative--and students demonstrated excellent teamwork and growing confidence with both content knowledge and technology skills.
We are now beginning our Greek mythology unit, where students will read approximately the first 100 pages of D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. The reading is divided into five sections, each with a short reading check on the due date. These checks count only as a homework grade and serve both as building content knowledge and an opportunity to strengthen reading comprehension skills. Students should bring their book home, and it may remain there until late March. I recommend listening along to the audio version on google classroom while reading the book as these stories are meant to be fun! After completing mythology, we will transition into studying the geography and vocabulary of ancient Greece.

SEVENTH GRADE
I wanted to take this opportunity to re-introduce myself. My name is Mr. Nicholas Slaughter, and I am Ms. Sherry Nolan’s Long-Term Substitute. I started the first Monday this February and have really been enjoying teaching at the Bromfield School. I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching this January 2026 from Boston University and graduated from Clark University in 2021 with a double major in mathematics and psychology. Before matriculating at Boston University, I was a paraeducator for about three years.
Prior to February Vacation, I started a unit on angles. We first learned about and explored how a triangle can be formed while thinking about how to classify triangles by both their sides (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) and angles (acute, right, obtuse). We then transitioned to talking more generally about other types of angles there are when dealing with angles (adjacent, vertical, complementary, supplementary).
During the FLEX period, the week right before February Vacation, all five of the core 7th Grade Team hosted different activities across the five days; including a SEL lesson, making windmills, a SET tournament, getting-to-know-you activities, and academic support.

EIGHTH GRADE
In science, students completed Unit #4 about density and buoyancy before break, and now we are moving into Unit #5, Light and Thermal Energy. We will be studying the structure and function of thermometers and barometers, states of matter and the phase changes they go through, conduction, convection, radiation, and the nature of light using spectrometers. There are a lot of helpful videos in the “links” document for this unit. We won’t have time to get to them all in class and for homework. Please encourage your child to check them out.
In Flex this week, in addition to the usual ELA, math, and academic support work, we will have a volleyball tournament where 8th graders get to battle against the seniors!

Greetings from the Bromfield Science Department!
Consider being a judge at the 2026 Science Fair. The annual Bromfield Science Fair will take place in person at The Bromfield School, 14 Massachusetts Avenue in Harvard, MA on Friday, March 7 at 3:30 pm. What could be more fun than interacting with some enthusiastic and energetic young scientists on a topic they’re passionate about?
Prior experience is not required; training and guidance will be provided. A background in science is helpful but not essential. What’s more important is a love of learning and an interest in interacting with young scientists. Judging at the science fair requires about 1½ to 2 hours. We ask judges to arrive at 3:00 pm, so we can start with a brief training session. Judging will finish around 5:45 pm, depending upon the number of projects that are in your panel.
If you are interested and available to judge at this year’s science fair, please complete this form (link: https://forms.gle/XnuYJE7xxUzgm7pp8) with your contact information as well as the subjects and grade levels you prefer to judge. We will determine judging assignments based on the number and types of projects and do our best to match your preferences. Please contact Kristen Vanderveen, the Bromfield science department leader, with any questions or changes to your availability.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
The Bromfield Science Department
