Weekly Newsletter   |  January 8, 2025
Dear Bromfield Middle School Families,

Happy New Year! While I appreciated the break from school, it was wonderful to welcome everyone back last Thursday. And while the weather has turned frigid, I am here to remind everyone that the days are (slowly, gradually) getting longer!

I wanted to let you know that I am holding a midyear assembly for grade level on the following dates:

Grade 6: January 22

Grade 7: January 8

Grade 8: January 29

I share these dates so that you might ask your child about their takeaways from the assembly if you are so inclined. The goal of the assemblies is to reinforce expectations of behavior both in and out of the classroom and to continue our work to realize our district core value of Cultivating an Equitable, Just, and Inclusive School Culture. I encourage families to speak candidly at home about the topics we discuss in the assemblies, which will include treating others with kindness, the impact of certain harmful language, appropriate behavior at school dances and performances, and the perils of online behavior.

Finally, I want to plug our semi-formal Snowflake Dance this Friday, January 10, 7-9 PM in the Bromfield Cafeteria. Please see the details of this event below. I also did want to touch open phone use at dances. While it has been suggested that we should ban phones altogether from dances, students have advocated to allow them. I want to honor student voice and therefore give students the chance this week to show that they can be trusted to act responsibly with phones at the dance. In particular, students need to understand that they may not take unauthorized photos or videos of anyone and may not post any content without permission. If students are unable to abide by these expectations, they will need to leave phones at home.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mr. Daniel Hudder
Bromfield Middle School Principal

WEEKLY UPDATES

SIXTH GRADE

Welcome back from winter break! As we return to the classroom, the sixth-grade team wants to express our excitement about the progress our students have made and the continued growth we anticipate as we enter the second semester. The first semester is drawing to a close, and we are committed to supporting each student's academic and social development during this critical time, turning in missing assignments, papers, etc. Our team is focused on helping students build upon the foundational skills they've developed thus far, ensuring they are prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the upcoming semester. We recognize that learning is a collaborative journey, and we appreciate your ongoing support in nurturing your child's potential, both in the classroom and at home. As we move forward, we will continue to create a supportive, engaging environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and personal growth. Together, we can help our students thrive and reach their fullest potential.

SEVENTH GRADE

Seventh graders, in Math this week, have been comparing proportional relationships (we studied in the fall) with linear relationships through graphs and investigating constant rate of change.  We are starting our next unit on solving linear equations algebraically and will progress from one-step equations to solving multi-step equations with one variable.   We will learn about special situations that have one solution, no solution, or infinite solutions when there is a variable on both sides of the equation.   This builds upon our previous units on operations with rational numbers, and simplifying expressions using properties

In Flex, seventh graders ended the year with a fun day with their FLEX groups.   They then started the new year with two academic blocks to help them ease back into school and get caught up on work if they missed any days before break.

As the weather can be cold this time of year, please remind your student to bring appropriate layers to school for going outside.  The students have the opportunity to go outside during lunch and also during our common time.

EIGHTH GRADE

In English language arts, we started the new year with a ‘choices day’ -- students could read, write, speak, and listen using flexible means of expression in the classroom.  Students also had a mini-conference with Ms. Hodgens and Mr. Shaw to check-in on progress on the major essay assignment written just before break, on Knud Pedersen’s characterization.  Our next anchor text is an excerpt from Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl, and we’ll read with a focus on her narrative style in the letter format.

In Flex this week, grade eight students started the year with academic support, and many students sought out feedback from teachers.  Students also had an opportunity to ‘drop everything and read’ their choice texts on Friday.  Finally, students voted on the prize they want for winning the grade level competition in our recent food drive.  The options are kickball, basketball, and new recess equipment.  We’ll be excited to see which option wins!

UNIFIED ARTS

This month in Bromfield Middle School PE we’ll be prepping for and playing the fastest growing (interest) sport in the school, Volleyball. Students will work on building skill and practicing in small-sided game play using beach balls, trainer volleyballs, and standard volleyballs as they build their comfort levels leading up to tournament style competitions.

After Volleyball, we’ll return our focus to fitness with cardiovascular fitness challenges and time in the Bromfield weight room to explore muscular endurance exercise using low weight machines and body weight exercises. During the fitness unit our goal will be to be able plan and execute a full body workout that is age/fitness level appropriate, one of the more challenging parts of staying fit.

Dear Community Members,

The Project 351 Club and the class of 2029 would like to thank all HES and TBS families as well as community members for supporting the annual Loaves & Fishes food drive this holiday season. We donated 1,714.1 pounds of food and necessities.

The drive was a community effort, and your contributions -- of time, energy, “spreading the word,” endless goodwill, and food and personal care items -- will immediately help our friends and neighbors. Likewise, we also want to take this opportunity to let you know that we are here for you.  If you and your loved ones are struggling with food insecurity or hunger, you are not alone.  Loaves and Fishes food pantry can and will help you this year, and the Project 351 Club will continue to collaborate with Loaves and Fishes. For immediate help with securing food, please contact Loaves and Fishes via their website, https://loavesfishespantry.org/, or via telephone, 978-772-4627.

Again, our community and all the members of the Project 351 Club thank you for your support and contributions!

Sincerely,

Project 351 Club and Class of 2029

The Project 351 Club would like to thank all sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students and families for a phenomenal food drive!  A related poster is here.
